Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI)
Persistent Desktops
Persistent desktops are often preferable to non-persistent VDI designs. However, they are complex and expensive to deploy because of the demands they place on storage. XtremIO makes them not only feasible, but cost-effective and simple to deploy.
XtremIO delivers a “better than physical desktop” user experience and the lowest cost per desktop, while eliminating complex provisioning.
VDI projects often fail because early results in pilot testing do not scale into production or the economics of implementing VDI just don’t work out when virtual desktops cost as much or more than physical machines.
With XtremIO, VDI can be deployed using physical-to-virtual (P->V) conversions, with an improved user experience, while letting end-users maintain control their virtual desktop.
- Best $/Desktop. SSD user experience. VDI reference architectures from incumbent vendors call for 12-20 IOPS/desktop because that’s all they can deliver. Today’s applications demand far more and anybody who has used a device with flash storage (MacBook Air, iPad, iPhone, Ultrabook) will not be satisfied with a fraction of the performance of a single SATA hard drive. With XtremIO, we plan for 100 IOPS/desktop with the ability to burst to thousands and we do it at a lower $/Desktop than disk-based solutions.
- Simple scaling. Rolling out new desktops or delivering more I/O to existing desktops is easy with XtremIO’s scale-out design. You can support any VDI rollout from pilot through large scale production on the same storage system with a single management point.
-
No boot storm issues. XtremIO’s real-time deduplication not only reduces the VDI capacity footprint by up to 30:1, it makes boot storms a non-issue. No external caching or acceleration solutions are needed. VDI just runs fast – all the time, for both reads and writes.
-
Rapid Provisioning. Clone desktop images instantaneously and without consuming additional space. Hundreds of new desktops can be rolled out in minutes.
-
The best ROI. XtremIO not only reduces the storage costs, it also dramatically lowers the costs of the VDI server infrastructure by enabling much high consolidation ratios. XtremIO finally allows fully persistent virtual desktops to cost less than physical machines.
